UCSD Satellite Utility Plant

We had the pleasure of working on the University of California San Diego’s new Satellite Utility Plant building project in collaboration with EC Constructers and Hannah Gabriel & Wells Architects.
According to Jim Gabriel of HGW Architects:
“We wanted to connect the building to the site with long heavy walls that framed the uses within. We imagined a heavy thick wall that felt like layered earth, with textures and strata. A form and placement system was developed that captured this concept and expressed the varying textures and stratification of the canyon slopes. The long walls frame the light steel roof structure and smooth formed concrete infill walls creating a compliment of heavy and light, smooth and textured.”
In order to achieve the desired design-intent, we utilized the Lithocrete sedimentary wall system. We collaborated with the architect to determine the look they were after and started off by making mock-ups at our facility where we experimented until we achieved the perfect color tone and textures necessary for the project.
