The Wildlife Explores Basecamp at the world-famous San Diego Zoo is a brand-new immersive experience for children and families to learn about various animal species through active play and exploration. Exhibits and environments are designed to encourage curiosity and engagement, while building empathy and understanding for each unique species and the environments in which they live. This 2.3-acre attraction replaces the 61-year-old mini-zoo on the same spot at the south end of the zoo and features four distinct environmental biomes which are complex ecological communities with a distinctive group of plants and animals. The biomes at the zoo include a Desert, Temperate Forest, Wetland Marsh, and Tropical Forest and within these four distinct areas are animal exhibits and landscapes associated with their respected biomes. The project’s decorative paving was designed to create an immersive experience by giving the illusion that you are surrounded by the flora and fauna of each distinct biome, and we had the pleasure of bringing the designer’s concept to life by artfully utilizing a variety of water-based and reactive concrete stain colors and means and methods to emulate the different ecosystems.
