The new LEGO Movie World attraction area at LEGOLAND California is based on a series of adventures within the immersive world of The LEGO Movies. Consisting of a fully themed land featuring rides and attractions that bring to life the popularity of The LEGO Movie characters and their universe.
According to Landscape Architect, Richard Apel, the pavement design is one of many important elements that express the theme of the land and is based on scenes in The LEGO Movies as well as being consistent with actual LEGO brick pieces found in the various LEGO product lines. The fanciful colors used in the pavement design had to be carefully matched to LEGO’s official color system.
Swinerton brought us on board to install all of the project’s decorative concrete, including the splash pad, based on our experience working together on past projects. They knew we were capable of achieving the architect’s design intent which comprised of 8 vibrant colors in a checkerboard pattern. We achieved this by installing a high strength, richly pigmented cementitious overlay material, over a 5” thick standard broom finish concrete, to achieve the opaque UV-resistant colors. Since these weren’t standard color-chart colors, they all had to be custom matched to Lego’s pre-approved colors. We also installed the integrally-colored pedestrian and fire lane Bomanite stamped concrete with a running bond slate pattern.
