Located along Ocean Street in the Carlsbad Village are beach access points that lead visitors down to the remarkable North Carlsbad Beaches. Over time the coastal environment weathered and degraded the access points to the point where they were in significant need of refurbishment.
The City of Carlsbad selected KTUA to provide full landscape architectural services to refurbish and rebuild the various access stairways. The project entailed redesigning the beach access stair-structures to match the Village’s theme and fulfill the City’s mission statement to “enhance the lives of all who live, work and play in our city by setting the standard”.
The project includes seating nodes and enhanced overlook platforms, re-vegetation of the slopes with California native plants, and ensuring that the access points are structurally sound and can withstand the direct coastal environment.
We helped KTUA realize their design intent by using the Lithocrete-Sedimentary Wall System for the stair structure along with integrally-colored Quarried Stone finish for the stairs, and Lithocrete at the landings which feature an intricate blend of 6 unique materials broadcasted onto the surface which include sea shells, 4 different types of crushed colored glass, and 1 crushed marble aggregate.
